Guided tour of Vipava

Explore Vipava

Welcome to Vipava. You are invited to join us on a guided tour and explore the corners of this historic city with us.

You will get to know the architecture of Vipava, walk over bridges, see the springs of the river and experience the true pulse of the city.

We will start the route on the Main Square in Vipava, where stands the Plečnik monument. With the erection of the cooperative home in the years 1948 to 1950 and the erection of Plečnik’s monument to the fallen on October 5, 1952, the second Vipava Square was finally formed, named Tito Square in 1985, and now the Main Square, which is now a hallmark of Vipava.

We will take a look at the exterior of the baroque Lanthieri Castle, which was owned by the Lanthieri family. The Vipava manor, named the New Castle by Valvasor, was built around 1659 by Anton V. Lanthieri: this is evidenced by the year carved on the keystone of the portal leading from the palace to the bridge behind it.

The path will lead us to seven sources of the river Vipava. The Vipava River has the only deltaic source in Europe. We will walk through the famous narrow streets to Pavel Rušt Square, which the older locals in Vipava still call Stari trg. Under this name, the place was recorded in a document from 1367, when the merchants there were given the right to their fair.

We will continue our way to the famous Vipava church, the church of Sv. Štefan, which dates between 1460 and 1465. It is an exceptional building type, as it consists of a rectangular nave and a long two-pole choir with a five-eighth finish, surrounded by five double-stepped external buttresses.

We will end our journey with a tour of Egyptian sarcophagi from around 2450 BC. n. no. Today, the remains of Lavrin’s parents and son Albert rest in them. Sarcophagi are the biggest attractions of the Vipava cemetery.
