PATH DESCRIPTION

CLICK FOR DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The Gladiator – UTVV 60 km route begins in the centre of Ajdovščina and follows the paved path along the Hubelj River towards the southern wine-growing hills. It then ascends from Dolenje, passing the scenic church of Sv. Marjeta, climbs to the Planina plateau, passing the Guerila estate. The route then descends to the village of Slap and continues with a gentle ascent, passing through Lože (the 1st aid station), the picturesque Goče, and finally reaching Podraga.

The first serious ascent of Socerb prepares the runners for the famous 1,000-meter climb to the top of Nanos (1,262 m) – the 3rd aid station, after stopping in Podnanos (the 2nd aid station). Then, the route descends through the heart of Nanos, passing the Abram Tourist Farm and the chapel above Plaz, before reaching the valley. Runners are welcomed by a well-stocked aid station on the Main Square in Vipava (the 4th aid station).

After a short flat section, the trail ascends past the village of Budanje and crosses the southern slopes of Angelska Gora along a paved Roman path. It enters Ajdovščina at the famous Hubelj spring and continues towards the finish line in the town centre.

The UTVV ultramarathon challenge takes place in the valley where one of the most important battles of the late Roman period occurred. This battle, known as the Battle of the Frigidus, happened in 394. It was fought between the army of the Eastern Emperor Theodosius I and the army of the Western Roman ruler Eugenius. Theodosius’ victory united the Roman Empire under one emperor for the last time in history and solidified the dominance of Christianity in Europe.

    TESTIMONIALS

I have one really powerful and unforgettable memory from the race. At around the 20-kilometre mark, I met an older gentleman who gave me a four-leaf clover and encouraged me to keep running, saying, “You are great”. For the next few kilometres, I wondered whether I had dreamed it or if it had really happened. In the end, I finished in the first place overall, so I believe that this four-leaf clover really brought me luck!

This race is truly one of the best-organised races I have ever been to. I absolutely love the atmosphere of the race. All the volunteers and people living in the surrounding villages are so kind. It is incredibly encouraging during the race and adds to the wonderful atmosphere.

If you want to enjoy beautiful nature and the route, I highly recommend this Slovenian race. The race has great facilities, including showers, plenty of food, and helpful people. I will definitely be coming back here regularly.

    Karolina Lecianova, Czechia

    Gladiator, 60km

In 2025, UTVV once again confirmed its reputation as the most spectacular ultra-trail event in the region. Although the event continues to grow each year, the atmosphere on the course remains the same as it was at the very beginning: hospitable locals, dedicated volunteers at the aid stations and along the route, and a professional organizing team that, in cooperation with mountain rescuers and other services, ensures that we feel safe even under the most demanding conditions on this very challenging course.

UTVV seems to me to be the ideal event for anyone who wants to take on the 100-mile distance for the first time.

    Anže Sobočan, SIovenia

    Emperor, 160km

For me, UTVV is an experience, not just a race.

It’s a journey through the Vipava Valley.

The night ascent to Nanos has a special charm—no matter the weather—just like the awakening of the day on Čaven, with views of vineyards and blooming acacias.

The race is just the right size to let you enjoy even the solitary moments on the trails.
